What to expect

Families hike a well-maintained trail that winds through wooded areas before opening up to summit views of Penobscot Bay and the surrounding islands. The main trail is about a mile each way with a moderate incline, manageable for elementary-aged kids who are comfortable walking longer distances. At the top, there's a stone hut and open blueberry barrens where kids can explore and take in the coastal scenery before heading back down.

Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, and the trail is less crowded than on weekends. Late summer offers ripe blueberries along the summit, though you'll have more company during berry season.

No, the trail has roots, rocks, and a steady incline that make it unsuitable for strollers. A hiking carrier works well for younger kids who can't walk the full distance.

How long does the hike take with kids?

Plan for about an hour to an hour and a half round trip, including time at the summit. Younger or slower walkers may need closer to two hours.

Are there bathrooms?

There are no bathrooms on the trail or at the trailhead, so plan accordingly before you arrive.

Is there parking?

Yes, there's a small parking area at the trailhead on Beech Hill Road. It can fill up on busy weekends, especially during peak foliage and blueberry season.
